Things to Consider When Choosing Summer Wedding Colors

Theme

First of all, what’s the theme of the wedding? Depending on the theme or the overall feel of the wedding, you’ll need to find colors that represent that theme.

The theme of the wedding is what determines everything else in wedding planning, including what to wear and how to decorate. You can typically get ideas based on the event mailings, as well as the venue location. While it’s okay to wear any color (except white!), we suggest taking your cues from the save-the-date, wedding invitation, and website if you’re a wedding guest.

Location

Location is the second most important thing to think about. The location sets the atmosphere; it will have its own color scheme that you’ll want to work with. Let’s look at a few specific examples so you have ideas!

If you’re planning a rustic mountainside event, it would be smart to pick colors that you’d find in the natural environment there, like an array of greens with pops of color from local wildflowers – or maybe a mix of earth tones.

If the wedding will be an urban event in a big city, go bold and bright in your color selection with vibrant pinks and blues! Vivid, bold, and vibrant colors will make for a fun, edgy feel. Check out these funky color combos that would have an upbeat, trend-setting vibe.

Fuchsia and teal, bright purple and green, lime green and pink are some of our favorite summer color combinations.

For a formal, upscale wedding pinks, golds, and mint greens are delightfully tasteful. Rose gold and light brown are also beautiful colors to pair for a classic wedding.

Planning a tropical wedding? Orange, yellow, pink, turquoise, and reds are ideal for a tropical beachside wedding. Yellow, orange, and pink have a bright and energizing feel so they would be perfect for a hot summer’s day! (Psst, if you’re still looking for a beach wedding dress, find it here in our bridal wear shop.)

A mid-summer celebration around the 4th of July in the United States might call for an independence day inspired color scheme – think burgundy or dark cranberry with a gorgeous dusty blue.

For a formal affair, choose a timeless color scheme of royal blues, dark purple, and grey.

Formality & Dress Code

The final thing to think about is the level of formality of the wedding which will determine the dress code. Traditionally, formal affairs required black tie, whites, reds, golds, and royal blues. But in today’s modern world we’re seeing more colors show up at formal affairs. While it is still proper to adhere to the formal length and style of attire, it’s okay to get flirty with your color selection and spice things up if you find a formal hot pink dress you love, for example.

Next Steps for Summer Wedding Colors

Once you’ve decided on the color palette, we suggest choosing a spectrum of hues that complement one another within that color scheme. For example, if you go with orange, yellow, pink, and turquoise – you’ll want to pull some complimentary shades within those colors. A mix of lights and brights can work well, like a subtle light pink and a brighter pink paired with a vibrant orange. This way, the colors complement each other versus compete against each other. Plus, you’ll have greater variety to work with which will make decorating much, much easier (trust us!)

We hope this was helpful in planning your summer wedding colors or deciding what colors to wear to a summer wedding! Where do you want to get married?
