Fall has always been a popular season for weddings, but lately it has overthrown summer. According to The Knot, September and October are in the lead as the busiest wedding months of 2018. If you have an autumn marriage ceremony in your near future, you are probably thinking very hard about what is appropriate to wear to a fall wedding.
Fall Wedding Guest Attire
Fall is a very romantic season; the changing colors and the crispness in the air naturally make most people starry-eyed. It is a popular time of year for weddings, which can create wardrobe challenges for people attending. It is easier to find weather appropriate dresses and skirts for spring and summer, but what’s a girl to do when it gets chilly?
Colors
It is always easiest to start with color. Take inspiration form the landscape around you: forest green, dark wine, burgundy, apricot, dark blue, plum, deep purple, rust, and all shades of brown are very appropriate. Stay away from bright colors, as they are way more suitable for summer. If you have the confidence you can rock orange hues, like burnt orange, but you have to be smart with styling and accessorizing, as you do not want to end up looking like a giant pumpkin.

As for the accessories you can add a touch of gold with gold toned accessories like a stylish belt, shoes or handbag.
Material
Dressing up in the chillier weather means staying appropriate in the cool outside, but still being comfortable and feeling breathable enough to turn up the heat on the dance floor. Fall weather can be unpredictable, and if the wedding is outdoors your material choice is even more important. Choose garment textures that are nice to touch and to see. Silk and satin make the ideal materials, but you can get seasonal with cashmere or velvet too. When planning what to wear at a fall wedding, consider combining fabrics for a luxurious look.

Layers
The temperature could drop 20 degrees over the course of the evening, be prepared with a light layer to keep you warm. A shawl or a scarf is the perfect addition to a formal dress.
Wedding Guest Styles for Autumn
For a black-tie event it is all clear: long formal dress is a must. Black is acceptable, but a jewel tone will feel more festive. Madame Bridal offers a beautiful selection of formal wedding guest dresses, so feel free to browse the gorgeous styles.
Long, sweeping skirts never go out of style. At any semi-formal event, whether in the daytime or evening, it is hard to go wrong with a flowing, ankle-length skirt. While this would not necessarily work for a black-tie or formal daytime wedding, it is perfect attire for an outdoor autumn ceremony.
You can’t go wrong with a black dress. And grey tights are a bit more interesting than black, so that will add a little something extra! And a black blazer, or sweater, could add another layer of warmth. The shoes, though, may be a bad idea. You never know how soft the ground will be at a farm, and you don’t want to be sinking all night. Stick with wedges. Or boots!
Patterned dresses are perfect for a fall wedding. We love the classic shapes that will flatter you and keep you looking stylish and sharp. Don’t forget – don’t be afraid to wear tights! You’ll need them to survive the unpredictable autumn weather.
